Railroad Medicare Beneficiaries
SMAC Announcement

The Railroad Retirement Board Awards Palmetto GBA New Medicare Contract

For more than a decade, Palmetto GBA has processed claims for Railroad Medicare beneficiaries out of its Augusta, Georgia, office.

It is with great pleasure to announce that the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) has once again awarded its contract to Palmetto GBA, and its Augusta office will continue to handle Part B claims for RRB beneficiaries. This award names Palmetto GBA as the Railroad Specialty Medicare Administrative Contractor (abbreviated as 'SMAC').  The award was announced on September 28, 2012.

The transition to the new contract award does not have any impact to you, and our beneficiary contact center telephone number and hours remain the same, as well as our website address and Facebook address as shown below:

  • Beneficiary Contact Center: 800-833-4455
    • Open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. ET
  • For the hearing impaired, call TTY/TDD: 877-566-3572
    • This line is for the hearing impaired with the appropriate dial-up service and is available Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. ET
  • Website address: www.PalmettoGBA.com/rr/me
  • Facebook website address: www.Facebook.com/MyRRMedicare

Your claims will continue to be processed as usual, and we are notifying your doctors, practitioners and suppliers about the award of this SMAC contract. Because there will be no changes in their enrollment with Railroad Medicare and the Railroad SMAC, no changes to how they bill us, and no delays in claims processing, we expect this to be a seamless transition that will be completed by February 1, 2013.

Gina Jenkins, Program Manager for Railroad Medicare and SMAC, said the Augusta team is looking forward to continuing its historic high levels of service to our beneficiary customers.

“While Palmetto GBA has held the Railroad Medicare contract for more than 10 years, many of the staff here at our Augusta office has processed clams and answered inquiries for Railroad Medicare beneficiaries for more than 35 years,” Jenkins said. “We look forward to being here for you and providing the highest levels of customer service that you have come to expect, and most certainly, deserve.”

Tom Dwyer, National President of the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, expressed his good wishes to Palmetto GBA on the SMAC award. "Congratulations to Palmetto GBA on their recently awarded contract from the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) to handle claims from Railroad Medicare Beneficiaries under Plan B."
